Funeral Service Information for Ms. Catrina

Posted 05/23/2018

Dear Teller Community,

As we have shared with you already, our beloved cafeteria manager, Catrina Jones, passed away on Friday, May 18th, 2018 at the age of 48. Because Ms. Catrina was such an amazing person, we wanted to take this opportunity to share some details about her
life and funeral service information.

Catrina Jones never took a shortcut, whether in baking, singing, or connecting.  Cinnamon rolls. From-scratch bagels. The Thanksgiving lunch when she saved up extra ingredients to make a truly homemade feast. Her food cared for staff, students, and
family at Teller Elementary. But they weren’t the only reasons that she was so loved.

Ms. Catrina made everyone feel like he or she had a special relationship with her. Her focus was like a warm light that focused on anyone in her presence, spiced by a sly sense of humor.

After her death, the memories poured forth:
“I loved hearing her sing happy birthday in the lunchroom when a student had a birthday. Her voice was beautiful and when she spoke, she never got mad about anything.”

“Her kindness to our son, Ben, will not be forgotten.”

“She always had a smile on her face and made everyone around her feel special and loved.”

Catrina Jones was born Aug. 18, 1969, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She is an alumna of Emily Griffith Opportunity School and the Restaurant School of Philadelphia, where she earned an associate’s degree in culinary arts. She also served six years in the Navy.

Ms. Catrina joined Denver Public Schools in 2011, and worked at Bryant-Webster, Munroe, and Teller Elementary Schools. She served as the Food and Nutrition Services Lunchroom Manager at Teller after completing the district’s Manager Training Program in 2015.

Catrina Jones is survived by her two children, Kaliq and Shemiah Washington. In honor of Catrina’s service to our country, she will be laid to rest at Fort Logan National Cemetery.

Services will be held to honor Catrina’s life on Saturday, May 26th at King Baptist Church [3370 Ivy St. Denver, CO 80207] at 3:00pm. Additionally, Teller will be dedicating our lunchroom and kitchen to Ms. Catrina in honor of her service to our community at the close of our talent show on Thursday, May 31st, 2018. If you would like to join our dedication ceremony, please plan to attend either talent show at 8:45am or 10:25am as we will honor Ms. Catrina at the close of both performances.
