September 2009 Tellergram
From the Principal….. Thank you, ![]() Upcoming AssessmentsOur second through 5th grade students will take the Math, Reading, and Writing Benchmark assessments between Sept. 9 -16. Each whole group test takes about 45 minutes to an hour for students to complete. Students will not come to school on Friday, September 17, while teachers will collaboratively grade the Benchmarks tests . This data will be used to drive instruction and to address individual needs of students.Classroom Monthly Newsletters Beginning in October, and monthly thereafter, your child’s teachers will be sending home a Newsletter letting you know of upcoming events for the month, vocabulary and subject foci and other information that will help you be aware of what your child is doing in class, as well as ways you can support your child at home. After School Pick-UpThe drive through pick up at the curb lane on Garfield is working well. Please remind other family members or friends of these procedures, if they will be picking your child up at the end of the day.Teller’s Policy on Birthday Celebrations
To minimize interruptions to classroom instructional time, we only celebrate individual students’ birthdays at school with treats for the class in the ECE and Kindergarten classrooms. In grades 1-5, teachers recognize students’ birthdays in their classroom in their own special way. However, you may recognize your child’s birthday by donating a book in their name to their classroom library. We invite you to schedule with your child’s teacher a time to come in and read the book to the class in honor of your child. Please take note of this Safety concernPlease do not bring your pets onto the school grounds during school hours. Even though your dog or cat is considered friendly, many students rush animals and interact with them inappropriately and your pet may not tolerate that well. Please keep in mind that some students have serious allergies to dogs and cats.Book Donations! The employees of Colorado State Bank and Trust (with three locations near Teller: First & Monroe and 16th & Broadway, and Colfax & Jasmine) collected over 400 books for Teller’s Library. Since we are now at almost 400 students, that means we raised our library collection one more book per student. Our goal is to reach 31 books a student . Thanks to Colorado State Bank and Trust, we now have 23, and are back in the “Achieving” category! The bank didn’t stop there…they also had volunteers come in and catalog all the donated books.Thank you Thank you Thank you from all of us at Teller. Hot BreakfastTeller’s Lunchroom continues to serve hot breakfast! The lunchroom opens at 8:30 am. Please join the Teller students for breakfast to promote this program at our school!Meal Charging PolicyAny student in grades ECE through 5th grade who forgets or loses his/her money may charge up to $5.00. Prior to this limit being reached, a written notice will be given to the student to notify the parent/guardian. If payment for charges is not received the next school day, an alternate meal will be served. If charges are still not paid after two days, a nutritious snack will be served instead of a meal. In all cases, the charges MUST be paid back.Teller Elementary Destination ImaginationCall for COACHES! We need COACHES! (There is training for Coaches.) 2009-10 Team ChallengesImagine that you and a few friends are given a project to complete in an eight week period, without help from anyone outside the team...The project involves designing and constructing a technical device that must move from point A to point B under its own power. Imagine that you must also write, produce, and star in a story that involves the technical device. You need to make props, costumes, and everything else, and package it into an eight-minute Presentation. Now imagine that you and your teammates are 10 years old and you are hearing the thunderous applause of an enthusiastic audience as you present your completed project! If you think this is far-fetched, you haven¹t been to a Destination ImagiNation® Tournament! Our teams work on and solve Team Challenges like these, completely on their own. Why Team Challenges? Our Team Challenges encourage development of Creative Problem Solving techniques, teamwork and creative process over a sustained period of time, usually eight to twelve weeks. Our Challenges are designed to be:
--Joy Urbach Tardy StudentsI have noticed that we have 10-12 students tardy each morning. Students are considered tardy if they are not with their teacher when the 9:00 bell sounds. The new DPS data system is now able to track student absences and tardies in hours and minutes. Students must report to the office if they are not in the classroom when the 9:00 tardy bell rings. Elementary school is a good opportunity to start teaching your child the importance of punctuality.Follow-up of excessive unexcused tardies will be handled by the Attendance Officer. Don’t forget to buy your GROCERY CERTIFICATES!!Grocery certificates equate to free money for Teller! You buy a certificate to purchase the groceries at King Soopers or Safeway…on groceries you’re going to buy anyway… and Teller gets 5%!Please stop by the office to pick up your certificates today! ![]() New!
