October/November 2008 Tellergram
From the Principal….. I have truly enjoyed my last 10 years at Teller Elementary. I have learned so much working with a variety of people who are dedicated to children, including many of the hard-working staff and tireless parents who help make Teller outstanding. It has been very gratifying to see our school evolve from an unknown neighborhood school to a highly sought after school. Our enrollment is now at the highest level it has ever been during the past 10 years. I will fondly recall many small moments and great experiences I had watching this transformation take place. It certainly could not have happened without our devoted staff and parents. I am proud to have taken a part in Teller's growth and feel confident that with all your continued support, Teller will keep on thriving and growing. Thank you to all the students, all the parents and relatives, all the teachers, all the support staff, all the support in the neighborhood-- thank you for making Teller great! My last day as Principal will be November 25. I am pleased that Jennifer Barton will resume her new role as Principal upon the return from our holiday break, on December 1, 2008. ![]() Amended 2008-2009 CalendarIf you have not already seen the Amended 2008-2009 calendar that was approved by the Board of Education in September, please visit the DPS website to become familiar with this new calendar. You will note that there has been 1 additional student contact day added on May 28, 2009.The most significant change however is the addition of Late Start days. The first late start day according the new DPS calendar will be December 12, 2008. What you need to know about Late Start Days:
Please mark your calendars. Bullying is Serious and may Constitute a CrimeBullying, name calling, teasing, intimidation and other behaviors will not be tolerated at Teller. The DPS School Board has adopted a “zero tolerance” policy in regard to these behaviors. The Colorado State Legislature has considered this issue to have such a serious negative impact on students that School Districts are required to have a policy in place for bullying prevention and education programs. Law enforcement may apply any of several laws already Colorado statutes to behaviors commonly associated with bullying situations. In accordance with School Board Policy of “zero tolerance, Teller will follow a DPS behavior intervention “path” for identified bullying behaviors. Students will first be reprimanded by the supervising adult and counseled for appropriate ways to handle problems with other students. Repeated offenses will result in the student’s referral to the Principal at which time parents will be requested to attend a conference to draft a behavior plan. Should bullying behaviors continue after a conference, the principal will implement systematic suspension for each subsequent incident of bullying behaviors. After 5-10 days of suspension, the principal may request that the student be expelled from Teller Elementary. If this occurs, an expulsion hearing would be held with a DPS official. As you can tell, bullying behaviors are considered a serious offense. Providing a safe and positive learning environment, free from bullying will be incorporated into the Educating for Character process. Please talk to your child about your expectations for their behavior.
