October 2009 Tellergram
We received two wonderful pieces of news regarding our School Performance Framework rating and the news that construction on our Learning Landscape/Playground will begin this summer 2010. A letter went home in last Thursday folders announcing our Meet Expectations and our High Growth and Status ranking. The hard work of students, staff and parents showed in our SPF scorecard this year. Our goal is to keep the momentum of our students’ growth and status moving upward each year. Thanks to three of our parent leaders – Twila Warner, Jill Cooper and Leslie Henson – Teller was moved from the schedule of receiving its Learning Landscape in the summer or 2012 to being moved up the schedule to this summer 2010. Construction will begin right when school ends and is projected to be completed by July 31, 2010. A small committee of parents and staff will be meeting to begin finalizing the plans for the Learning Landscape. If you are interested in being a part of this, please let me know. We will have our first Early Release Day for students on Friday, October 16. During this time, Teller Staff will focus on the Student Intervention Team process - appropriate interventions, progress monitoring and data collection, identifying areas in need of support and parent involvement in the process. Teams will also spend time working together to analyze and plan around the Assessment Bodies of Evidence for each student that we have gathered this past month of school. Sincerely, ![]() October 26 & 27th Parent/Teacher ConferencesYour child’s teacher will send home a conference sign-up schedule. Times will be scheduled between 4:00pm and 8:00pm on Monday, October 26 and Tuesday, October 27.Please take the time to sign up for a conference to find out how your child is progressing and how you can help. Students are encouraged to participate in the conference. Due to District scheduling, SBPRs (Student-Based Progress Reports) will not be available at this conference. The first trimester officially ends November 6, so we expect the SBPRs to go home in Thursday folders on November 19. Tiana Trost Art Teacher Teller Elementary ![]() Future Olympic Runners? …The Scoop on Mighty Miles.By Karen EsquibelSecond grader Joey Threlkeld is making strides as he participates in the Mighty Miles P.E. program at Teller, run by Ms. Chris and sponsored by the New York Road Runners Foundation. Mighty Miles teaches children the healthy habit of running for physical fitness and well-being. This benefit goes behind health of the body. In an article titled, “What Sort of Exercise Can Make You Smarter?”The New York Times Magazine recently made some interesting statements regarding aerobic activities, like running, and the positive effect on learning. For example, “…exercise changes the structure of the brain and affects thinking…exercise stimulates the creation of new brain cells,” and, “…any form of regular exercise, if it is aerobic, should be able to maintain or even increase our brain functions.” With Mighty Miles, students are challenged to run a marathon of 26.2 miles. So far, Joey Threlkeld has run 21.6 miles, the farthest distance accumulated by any student at Teller this year. Students have many opportunities to run their miles during P.E. class, lunch recess and during structured movement time with classroom teachers. Check out the walls outside the gym to see the progress each class is making toward the Mighty Miles Marathon goal. Upon completion of each Mighty Miles Marathon, students will receive a medal from the New York Road Runners Foundation. Ms. Chris is confident that many Teller students will be joining Joey in the winner’s circle at the end of the year! Dress Your Child Appropriately for the Weather As autumn and winter approach, we need to remind parents/guardians to send their children to school dressed to play outside in comfort. We will go outside as much as possible on the chilly/cold days. Students should wear jackets or winter coats appropriate for the projected temperature, as well as hats, gloves, scarves, socks and shoes that can withstand snow and puddles. The human brain is made of fats, and omega 3s can significantly improve attention levels, short-term memory and reading skills, as well as protect bones, joints and muscle tone.
