Roaring Tiger:
From the Principal ……
Thank you, thank you and thank you!

Teller’s parents and teachers did it again!  We had an awesome Halloween Carnival due to everyone’s tireless efforts.  This year’s carnival had more people in attendance than we had last year.  The “Junk Yard” theme for the Haunted House was quite clever.  The 5th grade Elective Students were very original with the theme they created.  They even led a backstage tour of the Haunted House for classrooms on Wednesday.  The clean up of the auditorium should be completed by Friday.  What a crew!  We look forward to more new volunteers at next year’s carnival.

We had over 90% of our parents attend Parent/Teacher conferences in October.  We welcome and appreciate the partnership our parents are forming with teachers to support their child’s education at Teller.  If you missed your scheduled conference, please call your child’s teacher to re-schedule.

Thursday, November 21st, 11:00 to 1:00 will be Teller’s Annual Thanksgiving Luncheon.  Come join your child for lunch at school.  (A flyer with details of the luncheon is in your child’s Thursday folder.)  Be sure to send back the tear off section to reserve the number of lunches you need.  Do not send payment; money will be collected at the luncheon.

Karti Lyons, Principal

“Got Kids? Got Choices!” School Fair November 29

Mark your calendars for the DPS “Got Kids? Got Choices!” school fair from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, November 29 at the Pepsi Center.

The Choice program allows students to attend a school other than the one in their neighborhood. Enrollment deadlines start in December and January.

Learn about the variety of choices available to your family. Hear what our superintendent has to say. Meet principals and staff from many area schools.

This is a district-wide event that showcases neighborhood schools, magnet schools and programs, charter schools and contract schools. Specially trained choice counselors will be available to meet with parents and families.

Representatives will be available to discuss programs for gifted and talented students and students who require special educational services. Translators also will be there that evening for Spanish-speaking parents and students. Copies of the district’s 2006 enrollment guide will be rolled out as well.

Don’t miss this great opportunity to learn what Denver Public Schools has to offer you. For more information, please contact the Communications Office at 720-423-3414 or the School of Choice Office at 720-423-3493.

Plan to attend the 4th Annual Veterans Day Fireworks Program with Mayor John Hickenlooper.  Saturday, November 5 at 5:00 pm at Union Station.  The event will feature live music, food and a special Veteran recognition ceremony.  See your child’s Thursday folder for complete details.

Ms. von Tersch Tells it All!
by Madison Yawger

Find out how Ms. von Tersch survived with four sisters!  Ms. von Tersch’s real name is actually Lana Katy Rock.  She just got married and changed her last name even though Rock was easier to pronounce.  Ms. von Tersch has lived in Colorado for a long 32 years.  She says, “I love the weather here.”  I agree.  Ok, here is one weird fact: when she was ten, she wanted to be a nurse or a teacher when she grew up.  Now here is the weird part, I am ten and I want to be a nurse or a teacher when I grow up!  Ms. von Tersch says she became a teacher because she likes to watch kids learn.  “My favorite part of teaching is getting to know different types of kids.”
Ms. von Tersch likes to hang out with her friends, ski or read for fun.  One of her favorite books is Mrs. Frisby and The Rats of Nimh.  Ms. von Tersch lived in York, England for some of her school years.  Also, she did survive with four sisters, but it did get rough at times!  To find out more about Ms. von Tersch, go to Teller Elementary on 1150 Garfield Street, room 203 and ask her!

Ms. Kandi Reveals All
by Aleya Jones

Ms. Kandi wanted to be the first female to step on moon at age 10, but that didn’t happen - she is a teacher now.  “I always wanted to help kids,” she said when she became a teacher.  When she was born in Denver at St. Joseph’s Hospital, she opened her eyes to see Colorado.  Kandi Mari Bergdoll came to love Colorado because of the weather.  On all those hot days, she fishes.  On all the cold days, she shops.  “I just love it.”
Who loves Star Wars?  Ms. Kandi is a Star Wars fanatic.  She probably saw all the movies.  Have you ever heard of Charlie Chaplin?  Ms. Kandi is his biggest fan.  She read his autobiography, she collects his stuff.  Wouldn’t you just say she loves him?  Kandi Mari Bergdoll has lived here for 28 years and decided to work here, at Teller Elementary.

Ms. Friedman’s Story
by Breanna Seaton

Ms. Friedman was born in Denver.  She lived here all her life.  She has one younger sister.  She wanted to be a nurse when she was 10 years old.  She wanted to become a teacher to see kids learn how to read.  Ms. Friedman quoted, “I like to see kids learn how to read and learn new things, too.”
She enjoys reading, watching movies and doing yoga.  The best book she has ever read is Rain of Gold.  She probably has never told a soul at school, she wants to be a jazz singer.  That is all there is to know about Ms. Friedman.

The Facts on Ms. Whitman
by Taylor Kipp

I recently had an interview with Ms. Whitman and I learned many facts about her that I didn’t know about her before.  Joyce Marie Whitman was born in Germany because her dad was in the Air Force.  She grew up with two brothers and two sisters, but one of her brothers is only fourteen right now.  Then her last name was Carpenter.  Of course, now her last name is Whitman.
When Ms. Whitman was ten years old she wanted to become a doctor.  But she became a teacher because she had a degree in anthropology, but other than that she has no idea why she’s a teacher.  Ms. Whitman thinks that the best thing about teaching is other teachers.  (What’s up with that!)
For fun, Ms. Whitman likes to garden and bake.  She has lived in Denver for twelve years and loves the weather.  Her favorite books are the Harry Potter series.  Finally, a surprising thing that almost nobody knows about Ms. Whitman is, she loves hockey!  So that was your inside look at Ms. Whitman and I’ll see you later.
(Ms. Whitman notes that she grew up in Detroit on 8 mile, just like Eminem.)
