May 2009 Tellergram

From the Principal…..
We have a lot to celebrate and look forward to this next month of school and into next year.

A few of the accomplishments worth celebrating include two of our Destination Imagination Teams placing in the State competition, Ms. Bonnefoi receiving the Boost Award, which will provide Teller with more money to purchase books for our Library, and the Wine Tasting, which was a great success.

Coming up this month, some students will be participating in the Shakespeare Festival under the guidance of Ms. Urbach, Ms. Whitman, and other parents and support staff.  Denverpalooza is right around the corner.  Disco Night, Field Day, field trips and continuations are on the calendar this month, too.

During this fun, last month of school, we also are charged to continue to provide strong and intentional instruction to students.  Students get so excited and, naturally, are easily distracted.  We appreciate the support offered at home to students as parents, grandparents and guardians encourage them daily to stay focused, work hard, and get along with others.

Great things are falling in place for next year, too. The Lights on After School grant has been submitted with the collaboration of parents and staff, as we strive to continue to provide enrichment and learning opportunities for our students after school for the 2009-2010 school year.  Also, several of our parents have created a very strong proposal advocating for construction of our Learning Landscape to be moved up from 2012 to 2010.

Thanks to all for the time and energy put forth to make Teller a school that meets the needs of the whole child.
Enjoy this beautiful spring weather and outdoor time with your families and friends.

The book fair will be at Teller May 5-8…including during King Lear

Cast & Crew are pleased to announce that we will again be on stage for the Denver Shakespeare Festival on Friday, May 8 at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts.  We have been assigned a stage and performance times.  We will perform each of 5 scenes from King Lear.

A Reminder to Parents:
We need your help in making sure your child has appropriate behaviors when you bring them to after-school events or activities.  Children should follow the day time school safety rules for evening activities.  For your child’s safety, here are a few behaviors to keep an eye on:
Walk in the school lunchroom and halls.  (Please take them outside if they need to let off energy)
Watch that they don’t climb or walk on the half wall in the ramp area outside the auditorium.
Swinging upside down on banisters or railings can result in serious accidents.
Roller blade shoes scuff and mark the floors. In addition, they are a safety hazard.

Thank you for enforcing good manners with your child to keep them safe at evening events.

Browse the Internet Like They Do In School

Does your child want to show you a cool web page they learned about at school? Can't remember how to get to it? The same home page that it is on all the library computers can be accessed from an internet computer at home or at a public library. Just type http://www.ikeepbookmarks.com/teller  in your web browser.

School Supplies

PTA will once again be selling bundled school supplies during registration time in August.  If you don’t want to hassle with fighting over that last pack of pencils, let us do it!  The profits from the sales go to the PTA.  What a deal!  Look for more information in the August registration packet.

From the Lunchroom:

All charges with the lunchroom manager are due as soon as possible.  The deadline to have all charges paid is Monday, May 4th.  After May 4th charging will no longer be allowed, so be sure to send money with your child.  Students without money will receive and alternative lunch.  Thank you in advance for pre-paying or sending lunch money with your students.
If your child receives free lunch, the charges were probably incurred before your child was approved for free lunch and they still must be paid.
Thank you,
Lunchroom Manager,
Melanie Hinkson

Wellness at Teller
The Teller Wellness Team is working with the DPS Wellness Team to build a program to help our community live healthy by making good food choices and exercising.  Ms. Chris, Ms. Barton, Ms. Sullivan and Jen Stier kicked off this year with an assessment of the school’s wellness and developed a plan to improve the community’s practices and habits. The plan includes rewarding children for setting and meeting goals that challenge their running endurance; demonstrating preparation of healthy foods to families and spending some time enjoying them together; preparing a healthy snack in each class room each month using foods parents donate; and increasing our P.E. resource to deliver at least 25 min/day of P.E. instruction to all students by school year 2010-11. Stay tuned for ways your can get involved in the fall!

This year’s Young Authors’ conference is on May 14th, 8:30-11:00.

Everyday Math

Dear Parents and Guardians
As many of you may know, your children (along with all other DPS students) study Everyday Math in their classrooms.  This math program may be a little different than the way many of us were taught in the past; however, this does not mean Everyday Math is too hard for anyone to comprehend.  EM is a spiral math program that introduces students to each math concept several times over their school careers.  Through this approach, EM hopes to build a better understanding of concepts, rather than just rote memorization of facts and procedures.

Although some of you may be unfamiliar with the techniques used in Everyday Math, there are many helpful resources available to you and your children right at home!
A great tool available to you and your child is the Everyday Math Games website.  This site offers a plethora of grade-appropriate games that support your child’s learning.  Most of our students at Teller have been exposed to EM Games, and know how to use the site.  To access the site, your child has a small card with both his/her login and password printed on it.
Also, on the EM Games site you and your child have access to the SRB (Student Reference Book) that you students use in class.  This is a fantastic way to help your child at home if he/she has any questions you do not know how to answer.
At school, your child accesses EM Games through an icon on the computer desktops, or through the bookmarks page, ikeepbookmarks.  Also, at home you can access the site through the DPS website at www.dpsk12.org, click on “Parents and Students” on top menu.  On the next page, click “EMGames” on the right side.
If you do not have a computer at home, have no fear, the EMGames website can be accessed at any library with internet access.  Have your child join the summer reading program through DPL toplay EMGames, and his or her summer will be educational and fun!
