Tiger in water:
From the Principal…

Spread the word that Teller is a Great School.  Students thrive at our school academically, artistically, culturally and socially.  Here are just a few reasons that make Teller GREAT:
  • Focus on the arts through vocal music classes, band classes, art classes, dance/movement classes. Shakespeare production of “12th Night” by Challenge students, 2nd grade play, “It’s a Jungle  Out There”.
  • P.E.Aces noon hour program developed by our own Miss Chris for a fun filled and peaceful playground.
  • Dedicated and caring teaching staff.
  • An awesome PTA that enriches students, parents and the staff’s lives in so many ways.
  • Our recently released 2006 3rd grade CSAP score of 80% (at or above proficient) puts our third grade student’s performance well above the state and district averages.  (Check the DPS website for more complete information:  www.dpsk12.orgCurrent CSAP Results.
Let your neighbors know Teller Elementary is an excellent school and the school of choice for all the neighborhood children in Congress Park to attend.

“TELLER ELEMENTARY, YOUR CONGRESS PARK NEIGHBORHOOD SCHOOL!”

Odds and Ends

Student classroom assignments for the next school year will be sent to parents around August 1st along with the registration packet and other information.
School supplies for each grade level will again be packaged by the PTA and sold to families who wish to purchase one.  (Look for information in the August Packet)

A reminder to Parents:

We need your help in making sure your child has appropriate behaviors when you bring them to after-school events or activities.  Children should follow the day time school safety rules for evening activities.  Here a few to keep an eye on:

  • No running in the school lunchroom and halls.  (Please take them outside if they need to let off energy)
  • No walking or climbing on the half wall in the ramp area outside the auditorium.
  • No swinging upside down on banisters or railings.

Thank you for enforcing good manners with your child to keep them safe at evening events.

Do we have your current address?

In early August, we will mail you your child’s registration packet and other important information before the start of the 2006-2007 school year.  To insure that you receive this information, please update your address with the office staff if it has changed.

From the Lunchroom:

All charges with the lunchroom manager are due as soon as possible.  The deadline to have all charges paid is Monday, May 8th.  Also, as of May 8th charging will no longer be allowed, so be sure to send money with your child.  We need to have payment in full by the 8th of May so we can settle our books and compile our financial reports.  No Exceptions!!  If you have any questions, feel free to contact me at 720-424-3577.  If your child is free, the charges were probably incurred before your child was approved for free lunch and they still must be paid.

Thank you,
Lunchroom Manager,
Kristi Waters

12thNight Title:

What the Crew Has to Say

Brandon Manus, Alma Pulgarin, Alex Asay and Morgan Milmore talked with Mrs. Urbach about being part of the crew for the play.  Here’s what they had to say about the experience.

Mrs. U.: Why did you want to be in the crew of 12th Night?
Alex: I wanted to put things on the stage.
Brandon: I didn’t want to remember all those lines, but I did want to be part of the play.
Morgan: I wanted to help.
Alma: I wanted to move things.

Mrs. U.: What do you do as crew?
Alex: Crew thinks of what scenery and props are needed.  And we make them.
Brandon: I made buildings, I helped paint and I helped make bushes.
Morgan: I wasn’t in crew until now, so I didn’t do the earlier stuff. Now I help with scenery.
Alma: If you are the prompter, you help the cast with their lines if they forget.

Mrs. U.: Can you be in both the crew and cast?
Alex: Yes, unless you have a big part.  Then you can only help before with making things.

Mrs. U.: Has being in the crew been fun?
Alex: Everything has been very, very fun!
Brandon:  I liked creating things because I have a big imagination.
Morgan: Yes, I’ve liked everything.
Alma:  I always wanted to be in crew.

12th Night cast:

What the Cast Has to Say

Madison Yawger, Aleya Jones, Taylor Kipp, Rachel Kennedy and Jena Winn talked to Mrs. Urbach about being actors in 12th Night.  All of these students have large parts.  Here is what they had to say about it.

Mrs. U.: Why did you want to have a part in 12th Night?
Jena: I wanted to have a part because I LOVE to act.
Rachel: The rest of the plays that I was in were really good and because the play sounded good.
Taylor: I like to perform and act in front of people.
Madison: I enjoy acting.
Aleya: I like to perform and act.

Mrs. U.: Are you happy with the part you got?
Jena: Yes! I am a countess!
Rachel: Yes, it was bigger than the part I wanted.  I get to be a duke, and have a palace and servants.
Taylor: Yes.  I like to be silly and funny.
Madison: Yes, it fits my personality, and it’s a fun part.
Aleya: Yes.  I like to be funny and I am a ffol in the play.  I AM funny.

Mrs. U.: Why would anyone today want to read, perform or watch Shakespeare?
Jena: Because it’s awesome!
Rachel: People are still watching and acting Shakespeare because his plays are famous, and it’s weird how their language back then was.  Also, it’s funny, sometimes.
Taylor: Because it’s interesting and they use weird, funny language.
Madison: To keep it going and tel what happened back then.
Aleya: Because it’s funny and entertaining, and it makes you smarter.

Mrs. U.: Was it hard to learn all those lines?  How did you do it?
Jena: I practiced a lot.
Rachel: Yes, it was hard to learn my lines, but I did it because some of my lines were cut.  I know how to memorize because of other plays were I had big parts.  We also have a prompter, in case anyone forgets.
Taylor: It wasn’t hard because I had a bigger part last year.
Madison: Not really.  I just kept saying them where ever I went and eventually, I learned them.
Aleya: Yes, but I just kept on practicing so I would get better.  Also, I would act it out.

Mrs. U.: Was performing 12th Night fun?
Jena: Duh! (Yes!)
Rachel: Yes.
Taylor: YES!
Madison: Of course it was fun!
Aleya: Of course, but it was hard work!

Joy Urbach 12th Night:

The Director

Joy Urbach

Every year for the past 8 years, Ms. Urbach has been our Challenge Teacher and Director of all Shakespeare’s performances.

Here are her comments on doing the Shakespeare performances year after year:

“Putting on a Shakespeare play each year with third, fourth and fifth graders has got to be the hardest thing I do as a teacher.  It drives me crazy.  I have done some acting - in high school and with my congregation, but I never went to drama school. Each year, I think I must be nuts.  Each year, I remind myself that every year, the kids do an incredible job, and make everyone, including me, proud.  Every year, kids ask me what play we are going to do- on the first day of school.  Parents ask how I get the kids to learn their lines.  Other than telling them over and over to learn them, I don't do it- they do.   Everyone seems to get a lot out of it, and I have great support from the parents and the staff.  It's worth the worry and the work.”

Thank you, Mrs. Urbach for all the hard work you do!

PTA NEWS: MAY 2006

LAST PTA MEETING OF THE YEAR!!: FUNDRAISING

Thursday, May 11:  May PTA meeting:  5:45pm pizza, 6:00pm meeting (childcare provided)
Come help the PTA decide on fundraising opportunities for next year.

TELLERPALOOZA III – WOW!!!

We did it again!!  On April 29, Teller Elementary proudly presented Tellerpalooza III – a fundraising event featuring the best of the Denver music scene.  We earned over $11,000 !

Bigger and better than last year, Teller supporters from all over the neighborhood and beyond turned out for another fantastic night of music.  From the minute the doors opened at 6:00pm, it was standing room only.

The evening began with a special presentation from Teller and Dora Moore’s instrumental bands.  Proud parents and relatives from both schools enjoyed watching their children up on stage. Teller’s music teacher, Nico Baker did a fantastic job. Next, middle and high school students from Denver School of the Arts performed to the delight of the crowd.  Denver Public Schools’ musical talent shined.

The rest of the evening featured bands that kept the audience entertained into the wee hours of the next morning (see below for list of bands).  All of the bands graciously donated their time for this special fundraising event.  The turnout and support from the Teller Community was inspiring.

For the second year in a row, the venue for this concert was The Mercury Café (2199 California St in downtown Denver).  Many thanks go out to Marilyn and the incredible staff at the Merc.  Due to the relaxed and friendly atmosphere, children and adults alike had a terrific time.

Make sure to look for Tellerpalooza IV next spring – you can support Teller while enjoying a great night of local music.

A fundraising event like the Tellerpalooza takes an incredible amount of time and energy to plan and execute.  The highly dedicated Teller parents worked for months to bring about this successful concert.  Teller parents like Mark Stevens, Jody Chapel, Michelle Lang, Josh and Shannon Snyder, Lisa Kipp, Julie Lang and Michelle Kenrick put in the extra effort that made Tellerpalooza III a big hit.

Along with Teller parents, community businesses play an important role in supporting Teller.  Teller parents, staff and students would like to sincerely thank the following bands and businesses for supporting the neighborhood school:

  • The Panic

READING IS FUNDAMENTAL (RIF)

As you know, every child at Teller came home with two new free books last week.  Teller’s third and last RIF day of the year was a huge success!  Many thanks go out to the two parents that coordinated and facilitated these events this year, Sarah Kinzer and Sue Schwellenbach.

THIS MONTH’S FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY:  Looking Forward to Next Year…

Teller’s Community Yard Sale

Start saving all your donations for the annual yard sale!  Beginning on May 29, the Teller auditorium will be open, so you can start dropping off your donations.  Remember tell your neighbors and friends.  No item is too big or too small!

School Supplies

PTA will once again be selling bundled school supplies during registration time in August.  If you don’t want to hassle with fighting over that last pack of pencils, let us do it!  The profits from the sales go to the PTA.  What a deal!  Look for more information in the August registration packet.
