Yellow Tiger:

From the Principal…

Have an Enjoyable spring break!

I hope everyone has a delightful and fun filled break and are ready to complete the school year when school resumes on April 2, 2007.

Please help your child Dress for Success
As soon as warmer weather arrives, kids are inclined to want to wear clothes they would wear on the weekend or after school.  In order to maintain a successful learning environment, we need your assistance in helping your child distinguish between school clothes and play clothes.

The following are not appropriate for school:

•    skimpy shorts
•    tank tops
•    sweat bands
•    platform shoes
•    flip flops
•    shirts or tops too short to tuck in – no bare midriffs
•    sagging pants
•    muscle shirts that expose the torso

Kaleidoscope Corner Registration

Registration for Kaleidoscope Corner is in May!  Returning families can register the first week in May, times to be determined.  New families can register the second week in May.

Bricker Memorial Wall:

Destination Imagination

On April 14th six teams from Teller will participate in the DI tournament at GWHS.  Three teams are primary teams, called Rising Stars.  These teams don’t compete, they participate.  They are all working on the same challenge, entitled, “Make It New, It’s Up To You”.  In this challenge, students choose a famous landmark and get inside of it.  They also make up an invention, a noise and a hat that will change the landmark.
The remaining teams are elementary, competitive teams.  Two of them have chosen, “CSI: DI” as their challenge.  In this challenge, teams create an invention which uses a property of light to solve a mystery.  They must create the mystery, act it out and include talents into their script.  The third elementary team chose a challenge entitled, “Round About Courage”.  In this challenge, the team creates a technical item to use in the play that they write about a hero that overcomes a personal challenge.  They also must demonstrate a talent.

After the tournament, the whole school will get to watch the six teams perform their challenge.  Come to GW on Saturday, April 14 to cheer our teams on.  We wish all the teams the best of luck, and a huge thank you to the coaches, who have spent hours and energy (and often money) to make DI possible at Teller.

Food Drive

The Salvation Army gratefully picked up all 715 cans of food gathered for Teller’s food drive, sponsored by the Student Council. Thank you for all your donations!

Young Authors

We are pleased to announce that the young authors for this year are first grader Isha Vial, who wrote The Friendly Witch, and fifth grader Drake Wheeler, who wrote Weredragon.

Each year, every elementary school is encouraged to participate in the Young Author’s Celebration.  Each school selects young authors to send to this district activity based on its own selection criteria. A primary (grades K-2) student and an intermediate (grades 3-5) student can be selected for this half day activity.

Teller has a committee of teachers at that collect student work, read and discuss the submissions and, with much difficulty, select two stories/ authors.  This is not really a competition, and no work is solicited from students or parents.  What we want is work the students have done at school.  The books that go to the young authors celebration are wonderful, creative works that we are very proud to have represent Teller students’ accomplishments in writing.

During the ceremony, all students display their books while parents, students and educators read them and interact with the young authors, encouraging them with written commentary about their books.  Each student receives a certificate and a free paper back book. In addition, there are fun activities and refreshments.

This year’s Young Authors’ conference is on May 3rd.

TELLER RECEIVES DISTINGUISHED CLASSIFICATION FROM DCTA

The DPS/DCTA ProComp Agreement calls for DPS to identify schools that show distinguished performance. Thanks to the cooperation of the entire Teller community, we have been honored with the title of Distinguished School for the 2005-2006 school year.

Selection of Distinguished Schools was based on the following three metrics:

Academic Excellence: recognizes any school that was identified as excellent by the state of Colorado and that had high rates of student attendance and parent satisfaction.

Beat the Odds: identifies schools that perform significantly better than predicted when compared to schools with similar percentages of free and reduced lunch students from around Denver and the state.

Student Growth: a metric designed by the state of Colorado, identifies schools where the number of students continuously enrolled for one year, who demonstrated a significant improvement in performance, surpasses the number of students who did poorly in the same period of time.
