TellerGram | February 2008
February 2008 Tellergram
From the Principal…..
IMPORTANT DATE CHANGE! Due to an unforeseen conflict, the 2nd and 3rd grade musical production, Seussical, will be rescheduled for Monday, March 3, 2008, 6:30-7:00pm. Many apologies for the inconvenience.
You are invited to 2 important meetings! One of the most important roles of the Collaborative School Committee (CSC) at Teller is to give feedback on the school budget and staffing for the upcoming year. Every year, Teller parents assist in making crucial decisions regarding the budget for the upcoming school year. The CSC looks at class number projections, teacher allocations, reduction in staff and supplemental programs such as Reading Recovery, Lindamood Bell, etc. These decisions directly affect you and your child. Please come to one or both of these meetings to give your input and to share your ideas. Thursday, February 14, 2008 – Look at our budget to see how we can staff our classrooms (5:30-7:00pm) Thursday, February 21, 2008 – Complete the budgeting process (This meeting will be the same night as the scheduled PTA Meeting and will start at 6:00pm) CSAP Reading Assessment for Third Grade Students will take place on February 21 and 22. Please make sure your child has gotten plenty of sleep the night before they are scheduled to take the test. A good breakfast the day of the test is very important to helping insure your child’s success on the CSAP.

Destination Imagination News We have five DI teams this year at Teller. There are three primary teams called ‘Rising Stars’: The Mars Rovers, Team Portals Scientists and the Twisted Wonders. Their challenge is called TwisDId History. Each team chooses an event that really happened and changes it, rewriting history. We have two elementary teams: My Dad Always Does That and Tell-er the Truth. Both of these teams are doing a challenge called ‘Hit or Myth’. This challenge requires teams to choose a myth or legend from another country and prove or disprove that myth. All the teams are busily writing a script, building props and costumes, working on side trips that display individual team member’s talents and learning how to do all this as a team. The Tournament is on Saturday, April 5th at George Washington High School. The presentation times will be available before the Tournament so that you can go watch our teams in action!

Ms. Snow’s first grade class celebrates their “How-To” lessons by showing off their hand-made hats!
Another Record Breaker! Congratulations! Quinn Yawger broke the all-time 4th grade jump roping record for jumping 42 minutes and 8 seconds without stopping! This means she broke her cousin's fourth grade record from last year. Her cousin is Ty Lang, the student who was highlighted as a 5th grade record breaker last month. *see hard copy for photograph*
The Mysterious Boat
When we came back from the winter vacation, I found an ornament shaped note in my mailbox. It said that this model was too much work to throw away, and it is a gift to me. I had no idea what that meant. I decided that the note was referring to a model of the Titanic that a student had made. There was another note from Ms. Lyons, to see her about this, but I thought that note went with other things in my mailbox. A few days later, a staff member tells me that there is a boat in the hallway by the kindergarten, and the boat was my boat. I went and looked, and sure enough, there sat a nicely made (prop) boat. Well, I didn't know whose it was, but I certainly could use it for our Shakespeare play, "The Tempest". I was on my way home, and it was late, but I wrote Ms. Lyons a note, asking that the boat NOT be thrown away, that I wanted it. In response, Ms. Lyons wrote back, asking where I wanted it. I replied, in my classroom, and it appeared. No one knows who brought it. Ms. Tomberg saw it on the playground, but she does not know where it came from, either. The consensus of the Teller staff is that some of my former students made it for a project in middle or high school. The original note was unsigned. Well, it is a wonderful boat, and we will use it! I guess we may never know where it came from. *see hard copy for photograph*
