TellerGram February 2007![]() From the Principal......We have limited space still available in ECE and kindergarten classes. ECE offers the option of either ½ day or full-day enrollment. Scholarships to ECE and Kindergarten are available to students of families that qualify financially. Please stop by the office and Ms. Lubin or Mrs. Gomez will give you the application and forms that need to be filled out.First round choice ends February 28, 2007! CSAP Reading Assessment for Third Grade Students will take place on February 13 and 15. Please make sure your child has gotten plenty of sleep the night before they are scheduled to take the test. A good breakfast the day of the test is very important to helping insure your child’s success on the CSAP. Valentine’s Day is the only classroom party that Teller Elementary provides for students. This year’s Valentine’s Day party will be held on Wednesday, February 14, from 3:00-3:45. Students will have the opportunity to express friendship to their classmates by exchanging valentines and through socialization with each other during the party. Please watch for information coming home from your child’s teacher regarding this event. Clothing Needed: We are in need of clothing for our Nurse’s office! We need smaller sizes that will fit ECE, Kinder and 1st grade students. If you have clothes that are clean and in fairly good shape that you could donate, we would greatly appreciate it! They are for spills, etc.! Student Absenteeism and Tardiness: Frequent absences and tardiness by students negatively impacts their learning and achievement levels. When students are tardy, they disrupt the learning and teaching in the classroom. Please plan your morning schedule to insure that your child is at Teller by 8:55. The tardy bell rings at 9:00 and students are counted tardy if they arrive after 9:00. Tardy students must check in at the office before proceeding to the classroom to get a tardy slip. Students, who are chronically absent and/or tardy and in violation of the Colorado School Attendance Law of 1963, will be sent a letter by Teller’s School Attendance Officer. The letter intends to make Parents aware of the law in order to avoid an Attendance Filing in Juvenile Court. Karti Lyons, Principal Teller Elementary Receives Toshiba American Foundation Grant!December 4, 2006 – Teller Elementary School received a Science and Math Improvement grant from Toshiba American Foundation in New York City for a project entitled: Developing the Scientific Thinking Process. The project was created by Patty Hakala, a parent and Richard Sprague, a teacher at Teller Elementary. Each year, Toshiba America Foundation selects 75 to 100 of the most interesting classroom projects in grades K-6 for grant recognition. Teachers from throughout the United States apply by submitting a project idea. Wniners are selected based on quality of the project idea and its potential for increasing student learning in science or mathematics. This project will be exciting and instructive for our Teller Elementary First graders. Congratulations to Patty Hakala and Richard Sprague! UPCOMING CSC BUDGET MEETINGSOne of the most important roles of the Collaborative School Committee (CSC) at Teller is to give feedback on the school budget and staffing for the upcoming year. Every year, our principal opens up the budget and allows Teller parents to help make crucial decisions for the upcoming school year. The CSC looks at class number projections, teacher allocations, reduction in staff and supplemental programs such as Reading Recovery, Lindamood Bell, etc. These decisions directly affect you and your child. Please look for a flyer announcing the dates and times of these important meetings. Every Teller parent is invited to participate and your input is greatly needed. Mark Your Calendars!Sunday, May 6th will be this year’s NIKETOWN 5K Run/Walk! All entrance fees are given back to Teller which will be used for our climbing wall! Please plan to attend this event!Monday, May 7 is Teller’s next scheduled Blood Drive! Please watch for more information in the TellerGram. Child Care Assistance ProgramKnow a family in need of child care assistance? If so, we have a program that can help! It’s called the Child Care Assistance program, and we need your assistance in telling our community about this program. The child care assistance program helps working families pay for child care services. As you know, DPS and Denver Human Services (DHS) have been working hand-in-hand to build better communities. To spread the message about this unique program, elementary schools will soon receive flyers and posters describing the DHS Child Care Assistance program. The child care assistance program is designed to help low-income families pay for child care. To qualify, families must meet the following income guidelines that are good through April 2007. Have your child's lunch delivered!Under the Umbrella, our local neighborhood lunch spot, will soon be offering punch cards for lunches for both Teller students and staff. These lunches will be healthy and delicious and will be delivered right to the school for added convenience. It is $30 for a five punch lunch card. You can purchase the card at the Teller office or at the shop on 12th and Madison. As long as you call the shop before 10:30 AM, Under the Umbrella will deliver your child's lunch!THIS MONTH’S FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY: Box TopsHave you been cutting out box tops for Education? If your answer is yes, it is time to turn them in. Just drop them in the bright pink boxes (located next to the cafeteria and library). If your answer is no, get clipping! It is so easy. Just clip the little box top off grocery products that you already buy and turn them into the school. Every 10 cents counts at Teller! February Tellergram Challenge/ DIThird through fifth grade Challenge students completed a unit on the Holocaust. Each student had to read a book and do a project with research. At the end of the unit, we had a speaker, who told us her experiences as a Holocaust survivor. Her name is Malka Mittelman-Seifert. Students wrote her, to say thank you for coming and sharing. This one letter, a sample of what students wrote, captures the reason for studying the Holocaust.Dear Malka, Thank you for coming to Teller Elementary and telling us your story. I understand that repeating that horrible time in your life was very hard. I think it was good that you shared it with someone because if we learn from the past we can prevent it from happening again.
