Teller Tiger 3:

From the Principal......

We have limited space still available in ECE and kindergarten classes.  ECE offers the option of either ½ day or full-day enrollment. Scholarships to ECE and Kindergarten are available to students of families that qualify financially.   Please stop by the office and Ms. Lubin or Mrs. Gomez will give you the application and forms that need to be filled out.

Student Absenteeism and Tardiness:

Frequent absences and tardiness by students negatively impacts their learning and achievement levels.  When students are tardy, they disrupt the learning and teaching in the classroom.  Please plan your morning schedule to insure that your child is at Teller by 8:55.  The tardy bell rings at 9:00 and students are counted tardy if they arrive after 9:00.  Tardy students must check in at the office before proceeding to the classroom to get a tardy slip.

Students, who are chronically absent and/or tardy and in violation of the Colorado School Attendance Law of 1963, will be sent a letter by Teller’s School Attendance Officer.  The letter intends to make Parents aware of the law in order to avoid an Attendance Filing in Juvenile Court.

Clothing Needed: We are in need of clothing for our Nurse’s office!  If you have any clean and in fairly good shape clothes that you could donate, we would greatly appreciate it!  They are for spills, etc.!

CSAP Reading Assessment for Third Grade Students will take place on February 15 and 16.   Please make sure your child has gotten plenty of sleep the night before they are scheduled to take the test.  A good breakfast the day of the test is very important to helping insure your child’s success on the CSAP.

Valentine’s Day is the only classroom party that Teller Elementary provides for students.  This year’s Valentine’s Day party will be held on Tuesday, February 14, from 3:00-3:45.  Students will have the opportunity to express friendship to their classmates by exchanging valentines and through socialization with each other during the party.  Please watch for information coming home from your child’s teacher regarding this event.

PTA NEWS: FEBRUARY 2006

FEBRUARY PTA MEETING

The February PTA meeting is an important meeting.  The entire agenda will focus on the PTA budget and more importantly, how much the PTA can give the school for next year.

It used to be that PTA fundraising would go to playground equipment or extracurricular activities.  That is not the case anymore due to Denver Public Schools continual cutting of the school’s budget.  Last year the PTA committed to contribute $30,000 to Teller to fund classroom teachers, intervention programs and paraprofessional time.

The goal of this upcoming PTA meeting is to decide the amount that the PTA can contribute next year.  Please plan on attending this meeting and giving your input as a Teller parent.

February PTA meeting:  Thursday, Feb. 9:  5:45pm pizza, 6:00pm meeting (childcare provided)

UPCOMING CSC BUDGET MEETINGS

One of the most important roles of the Collaborative School Committee (CSC) at Teller is to give feedback on the school budget and staffing for the upcoming year.

Every year, our principal opens up the budget and allows Teller parents to help make crucial decisions for the upcoming school year.  The CSC looks at class number projections, teacher allocations, reduction in staff and supplemental programs such as Reading Recovery, Lindamood Bell, etc.  These decisions directly affect you and your child.

Please look for a flyer announcing the dates and times of these important meetings.  Every Teller parent is invited to participate and your input is greatly needed.

THIS MONTH’S FUNDRAISING OPPORTUNITY:  Box Tops

Have you been cutting out box tops for Education?

If your answer is yes, it is time to turn them in.  Just drop them in the bright pink boxes (located next to the cafeteria and library).  Deadline: Feb 23.

If your answer is no, get clipping!  It is so easy.  Just clip the little box top off grocery products that you already buy and turn them into the school.  Every 10 cents counts at Teller!

Mrs. Brodhacker Reveals All!
by Rosa Malpica

First of all, I’m interviewing Mrs. Brodhacker.  When she was born, her name was Sharon Gardner.  She was born in Jefferson City, Missouri.  She has four brothers, one older sister and a twin sister!  She says it was fun having so many playmates, but being in the middle made her very competitive.
It’s very exciting that she has lived in Denver for 37 years!  The best thing about living in Denver, she says, is the beautiful mountains and all the sunshine, so she can play golf.  When she was ten years old, she wanted to be a veterinarian because she had lots of horses and hunting dogs and it was her job to take care of them.  If you ask why she became a teacher instead, it is because she taught swimming lessons and ice-skating lessons when she was in high school and college, and discovered she enjoys working with children.  She loves the energy the children bring to her life and she loves watching them learn new things.
I asked Mrs. Brodhacker what she likes to do for fun, and she said, “What I like to do for fun is hang out with my family and friends.  Also, I love to golf, cook, read, travel, bowl, garden, and fish.”   She also said, “I once caught an 86 pound sail fish!”  The best adult books Mrs. Brodhacker has read are, Giants in the Earth and Freedom Road.  She also has two favorite children’s books.  They are: Don’t Ever Wish For a Seven Foot Bear  and The Plant That Ate Dirty Socks.
Probably some things about Mrs. Brodhacker that nobody knows is that she loves sleeping late and she used to show her family’s horses in horse shows when she was growing up.  Isn’t that amazing?  If you want to learn more about Mrs. Brodhacker, just visit her at Teller Elementary School in room 204.

The Scoop on Mr. Schappert
by Leslie Orellana

He is not (well, almost not) single any more!  Richard Allen Schappert just got engaged.  How exciting!  Richard was born in Endicott, New York.  He has lived in Denver for three years.  He said he really likes the outdoors and the weather because it is always sunny.   As a child, Mr. Schappert wanted to be a pro baseball player, but will never be one.  He is now a teacher at Teller.  He became a teacher because he did not like school.  (That doesn’t make sense to me.)  He wants kids to have fun, but still learn.  He says the best thing about teaching is the look on a student’s face when they learn something.
Mr. Schappert likes The Lord of the Rings.  Don’t think of him as just a teacher, he really enjoys fly fishing, skiing, camping, and golf and loves to be outdoors.  Who knows what he will do in the future?  Tune in and find out, or rather, wait and see.
