December 2008 Tellergram

Snow CloudDear Teller Families - I am so excited to officially begin serving as Teller Elementary's principal beginning Monday, December 1.  My past 3 months as the mother to Molly have been so much fun and has offered me a time to recharge for this exciting new position.  Molly will spend her days with her Grandmother, who just moved out this past summer from Stowe, Vermont.  This arrangement brings me much ease and will offer me solace that she is being well taken care of while both her father and I are at work.

Ms. Lyons and I have been working closely since the opening of school in August and have built in additional days through February to ensure a smooth and orderly transition of leadership.  I have had the pleasure of helping to facilitate our staff professional development as we implement our Integrated HGT Magnet, as well as had the privilege to observe in the classrooms and to meet the students and parents.  This time has given me a strong understanding of all the wonderful programs already in place at Teller, as well as opportunities for us to grow even stronger as a school community.  I have learned a lot from Ms. Lyons and am in awe of all she has implemented and the relationships she has developed over her decade tenure at Teller.  Her shoes will be hard to fill.

I am looking forward to our years ahead working together and watching the growth of the precious little gems as the walk into the doors of Teller each and every day.

Well, the busy holiday season is here.  It can be a stressful time for both children and adults.  Letting your child help with the preparation for some of your family’s traditions can make it fun and less stressful for everyone.

As we go into the holiday season, I hope you will consider giving your child a book as a gift. When you give your children books as gifts, you communicate your love of and value for books to them.  If they see you reading and enjoying books or if you read to them or with them, they will follow your example.  (It doesn’t matter if the books are in your native language; the effect is the same!)

Our Teller Staff wishes the entire Teller student body and their families a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.  We will see everyone on Wednesday, January 7th when school resumes for the year 2009.

Jennifer Barton, Principal

ODDS & ENDS

Thanksgiving Luncheon

What a turnout we had of parents; grandparents and other family members joining our students for the traditional Thanksgiving Lunch on November 20th!  Over 150 parents and family members joined us for lunch.

CSC Policy on Parties at Teller

Several years ago Teller’s Collaborative School Committee (CSC) had decided that the only classroom party at Teller would be a Valentine’s party in February.  I want to inform all of our new parents that classrooms will not be having any holiday parties in December.

When your Child will be Absent

Please call 303-333-4285 and let the secretaries know when your child is absent and the reason. It is good to let the teachers know of your child’s absence, but it is a must that you contact the school secretaries!

School of Choice Information

The Denver Public Schools traditional Choice process allows students to apply to a Denver Public School that is not the school that serves their residence (neighborhood school).  This process is also used for students residing outside the city of Denver who wish to attend a Denver Public School.  Choice applicants are accepted on space availability.

2008-2009 School Year

Beginning on January 5, 2008, the School of Choice process will be available to all Denver families for the 2008-2009 school year. School of Choice Brochures are available at the DPS website (www.dpsk12.org) or at any school in DPS.

Important Information About Choice

1st Round Choice (January 5-January 30)
  • When are applications available?  January 5, 2009
  • Where can I get an application?  At the DPS website or any DPS School.
  • When are applications due?  January 30, 2009
  • Where do I turn in my application?  ALL APPLICATIONS MUST BE SUBMITTED AT A DPS SCHOOL.
  • How is it determined if my application is accepted?  All First/Round District Direct Choice applications are received and approved by the District. You may find a list of these criteria at soco.dpsk12.org or in the Teller office.

GOT A MATCH?

MoneyMany businesses and corporations have matching funds programs. If you work for one of these companies, you can make a tax deductible donation to Teller that might even be matched dollar for dollar! This is a great way to increase funding for our school. Each company has certain matching limits and rules. Please check to see if your company participates in this program and help reap twice the benefit!

School Health Issues:  Flu Season and Schools

Flu is an unwelcome visitor to many homes this winter.  Schools can help educate students, their families, and school staff about reducing the chance of getting flu and reducing the spread of flu to others.

FIVE FAST FLU FACTS

From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
www.cdc.gov/flu/index.htm
  1. Flu symptoms include fever, headache, chills, body aches, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion.
  2. Flu is spread when a person who has the flu coughs, sneezes or speaks, sending the flu virus into the air.  The virus enters the nose, throat or lungs of a person and multiplies.
  3. If you get the flu:  rest, drink plenty of liquids, and avoid alcohol and tobacco.
  4. Antibiotics like penicillin will not cure the flu.  The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot.  Over-the-counter medications may relieve symptoms of flu.  Decongestants, cough suppressants, and use of a humidifier can provide symptomatic relief.
  5. In addition to flu shots, three antiviral medicines are available by prescription that will help prevent flu infection:  Tamiflu, Flumadine and Symmetrel.
Things to keep in mind for school-age children
  • Encourage children to cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands frequently, and keep hands away from eyes, nose and mouth.
  • A sick child is advised to stay at home during the first days of illness when symptoms are most severe and the infection is most contagious.  Children can return to school when symptoms are improving and no fever has been detected for 24 hours.

‘Green’ Performance at Teller December 2

IMAGINATION MAKERS

On Dec. 2nd, our students will have the opportunity to see a play by the
Imagination Makers Theater Company. The performance at our school is made possible by a grant from the Janus Foundation.

“Fables: Old and New” is an imaginative musical play that first dramatizes children’s retellings of Aesop's traditional fables, then shows student-written modern versions of these tales. In addition to reusing old fables, the entire set for the play, all the props and the musical instruments have been created entirely from recycled materials.  Students can see that with little more than “junk” and a good imagination, something incredible can be created. The fable writers were from diverse backgrounds including African-American and Latino (one girl wrote her fable in Spanish), as well as a boy who was blind and a girl who was homeless. This entertaining and meaningful play promotes recycling in a fun way, and teaches simple but valuable lessons for life.

Imagination Makers is a professional theater company that has been performing for children throughout the Denver metro area for the past 28 years. www.imaginationmakers.org

Good News on the Cost of Replacing These Dreadful Auditorium Curtains!

Danny Reid, Manager of Facility Maintenance indicates that they can support a school’s efforts to replace curtains by contributing up to $1000. They will also provide the labor to hang the curtains and make any repairs/corrections to the rigging system that may be required.

With Facility Maintenance help, we may be able to replace the front and back curtains for around $9000.

Our student entrepreneurs and Chris’s coffee sales have netted us $3800 toward the replacement costs. With a $5000 contribution, a family donor will be recognized with a plaque placed on the wall outside the auditorium doors- and we could get our new curtains!

Any donation will help us toward meeting our goal of replacing the torn and worn curtains. Thank you for your continued support by participating in our fundraising efforts and in helping with this project!

A HUGE Thank You to all of our DI volunteer coaches!

Our student participation is limited this year by the amount of coaches we have. So, each and every one of you make a big difference!
