December 2007

From the Principal…..
The busy holiday season is here.  It can be a stressful time for both children and adults.  Letting your child help with the preparation for some of your family’s traditions can make it fun and less stressful for everyone.

As we go into the holiday season, I hope you will consider giving your child a book as a gift. When you give your children books as gifts, you communicate your love of and value for books to them.  If they see you reading and enjoying books or if you read to them or with them, they will follow your example.  (It doesn’t matter if the books are in your native language; the effect is the same!)

Our Teller Staff wishes the entire Teller student body and their families a Wonderful Holiday Season and a Happy New Year.  We will see everyone on Tuesday, January 8th when school resumes for the year 2008.

ODDS & ENDS
We had a phenomenal number of parents; grandparents and other family members join our students for the traditional Thanksgiving Lunch on November 16th.  Over 150 parents and family members joined us for lunch.

Several years ago Teller’s Collaborative School Committee (CSC) had decided that the only classroom party at Teller would be a Valentine’s party in February.  I want to inform all of our new parents that classrooms will not be having any holiday parties in December.

Karti Lyons, Principal
RIF Wednesday December 12th (9am-3:45pm) Your child will get a free book of their own choosing on this day. If you are interested in helping with this event, please contact Sarah Kinzer at 303.250.7631 or baxmurphy@hotmail.com.

School of Choice Information

2008-2009 School Year
Beginning on January 7, 2008, the School of Choice process will be available to all Denver families for the 2008-2009 school year. School of Choice Brochures are available at the DPS website (www.dpsk12.org) or at any school in DPS.

GOT A MATCH?
Many businesses and corporations have matching funds programs. If you work for one of these companies, you can make a tax deductible donation to Teller that might even be matched dollar for dollar! This is a great way to increase funding for our school. Each company has certain matching limits and rules. Please check to see if your company participates in this program and help reap twice the benefit! For more information, please contact Sarah Kinzer at 303.250.7631 or baxmurphy@hotmail.com.

Highly Gifted Applications
Applications for the Highly Gifted program for the 2008-2009 school year are available. You may send an email to joyce_urbach@dpsk12.org, or speak directly with Joy Urbach in room 307 for an application (available in Spanish) or to ask about testing. Send a note if you would like an application sent home with your child.

Applications are due December 14, 2007 and should be returned to the Gifted and Talented Education office at 13th and Fox.

Teller is not a site for the full-time, highly gifted program.
The Center for Health and Health Care in Schools
School Health Issues:  Flu Season and Schools

Flu is an unwelcome visitor to many homes and communities this winter.  Schools can help educate students, their families, and school staff about how to reduce the chance of getting the flu as well as reduce the likelihood of spreading flu to others.  Additional information from the experts is available from the links below.

FIVE FAST FLU FACTS
From the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
www.cdc.gov/flu/inex.htm

1. Flu symptoms include fever, headache, chills, body aches, tiredness, dry cough, sore throat, and nasal congestion.

2. Flu is spread when a person who has the flu coughs, sneezes, or speaks and sends the flu virus into the air.  The virus enters the nose, throat or lungs of a person and multiplies.  Flu spreads less frequently when a person touches a surface that has flu viruses on it.

3. If you get the flu:  rest, drink plenty of liquids, and avoid alcohol and tobacco.
4. Antibiotics like penicillin will not cure the flu.  The best way to prevent the flu is to get a flu shot.  Over-the-counter medications may relieve symptoms of flu.  The National Institute for Allergies & Infectious Diseases recommends acetaminophen (Tylenol) for children; aspirin or acetaminophen for adults.  Decongestants, cough suppressants, and use of a humidifier can provide symptomatic relief.

5. In addition to flu shots, three antiviral medicines are available by prescription that will help prevent flu infection:  Tamiflu, Flumadine and Symmetrel.

Things to keep in mind for school-age children

• Encourage children to cover coughs and sneezes, wash hands frequently, and keep hands away from eyes, nose and mouth.
• A sick child is advised to stay at home during the first days of illness when symptoms are most severe and the infection is most contagious.  Children can return to school when symptoms are improving and no fever has been detected for 24 hours.

Teller’s Auditorium Curtain

Now that our climbing wall is paid for, we have started our next school improvement effort. We are fundraising for new curtains for the auditorium.

For a $5,000 donation, individuals or families will be recognized on a beautiful plaque that will be placed on the wall by the curtain.

For a $10,000 donation, families or individuals will be recognized on a beautiful rectangular plaque that will be placed above the auditorium doors.

Any donation will help us toward meeting our goal of replacing the torn and worn curtains. Thank you for helping with this project.
