Jennifer Barton, Our New Principal
In January, 2008, the Teller Elementary community was
informed that the
current principal, Karti Lyons (on the right) was going to retire at the end of last
school year. Ms. Lyons has been the principal of Teller for
10 years.
She has contributed a great deal to the success story that Teller has
become. Her tireless efforts have brought a school that was
just .001
points away from being designated as a low performing school to a
school that is a high ranked CSAP school and just became designated as
a “top performing school” amongst Denver Public Schools.
A
dedicated committee of parents and teachers interviewed and hired a new
principal in February. Her name is Jennifer Barton (on the left), and she will make
the transition to principal of Teller in
December.
Ms. Barton comes to Teller with a great
deal of experience as an educator and as a school leader. She
has a BS in journalism and a Masters in Education with emphasis in
Administration. She has been with DPS over 12
years. The last 6 years have been in leadership positions as
Assistant Principal for 2 years and Principal for 4 years.
The transition has been a smooth one for the
teachers, parents and students of Teller. Over the last 9
months, Ms. Lyons and Ms. Barton have worked closely together to ensure
that Teller’s growth continues. The addition of the Highly Gifted and
Talented magnet will give
the teachers new challenges and skills. Ms. Barton is
committed to leading the school on this exciting path and making sure
that Teller never loses its focus on engaging each individual
child.
Ms Barton has stated that “as an educator and
Administrator, it is my goal to ensure a learning environment that
fosters the academic and social growth of the whole child. I want
children to be excited about school, to enjoy their relationships with
peer and staff, and to experience a thrill of learning that they will
carry with them the rest of their lives”.
In
conjunction with taking over this big role as Teller’s principal, Ms.
Barton has taken over an even bigger role in her life, she became a
parent for the first time in August. She has the added
benefit of not only having been a teacher and a principal but now she
will bring the experience of being a parent to her job every
day.
It is with heavy hearts that the Teller
community says goodbye to Ms. Lyons. We can’t thank her
enough for everything she has done for our little, neighborhood school
over these last 10 years. She will be greatly
missed.
Teller looks to Ms Barton to continue
leading this school in new and exciting directions. We welcome her to
our neighborhood elementary school.
