November 2009 Tellergram

From the Principal…
Happy Fall to you All!  It is quite amazing how quickly the time goes.  We, students, staff and parents, have accomplished so much these past two-and-a-half months – all due to our collaboration and focus around supporting our students.

For the next three Tellergrams, I will be including flash cards for you to use with your student when reading with them, looking at magazines or the newspaper, and assisting them with Reading, Writing, Math, and Science homework.  These are very rich words that students will use throughout their lives, as well as vocabulary words that appear on Benchmark and CSAP assessments.  If we can all work together to help our students understand these words and know how to use them, we will further set them up for success.  These vocabulary words can be used with all grade levels – ECE-5th.

Reading – Ask students to summarize what they have read and ask them to find words and details from the book that support what they are thinking.

Math – Students need to be able to show their work and explain their problem solving in writing, as well as know how to read graphs for information.

Science – Students need to know how to read and label charts and diagrams.

Writing – Students should add details to their writing and always write to the prompt.

Our 3rd-5th grade students will take CSAP in February and March 2010.  We have built systems

into our daily instruction to help students with test taking strategies and testing endurance.

We are spending our time with students teaching the State Standards, not to the test.  When testing begins, we want students to feel confident in their abilities, to take the assessments, and to continue on with their learning and academic preparation for their next grade level.

CSAP Assessment Requirements
3rd Graders – Total of 6 assessments – one hour each assessment

  • Mid February - 2 Reading
  • In March, 2 Math and 2 Writing
4th Graders – Total of 9 assessments in March – one hour each assessment
  • 3 Reading, 3 Writing, 3 Math
5th Graders – Total of 12 assessments in March – one hour each assessment
  • 3 Reading, 3 Writing, 3 Math, 3 Science

Our students are extremely sharp and bright.  Also in their favor are the parents and staff who support them.

Sincerely,
Barton Signature:

Spotlight on Student Health

By Jen Stier

Quick & Easy Snack:
Pumpkin Yogurt Cheesecake Shake

With colorful leaves falling and Thanksgiving around the corner, have some fun making easy seasonal snacks that give kids great nutrition. Look for simple recipes with pumpkin, apples, pears, dried cranberries and more.
Jaylen Jump Rope:
Pumpkin, for example, is full of carotenoids, which are known to reduce heart disease risk. It's also a good source of potassium, magnesium, fiber, and antioxidant vitamins A, C and E, which boost immunity and healthy skin and eyes. Try this yummy no-cook recipe, which also provides calcium for bone health:
Ingredients:
  • 1 14-ounce can pumpkin, chilled
  • 3 ounces reduced-fat cream cheese
  • 1 6-ounce container low-fat vanilla yogurt*
  • 2 cups low-fat milk
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 6 teaspoons graham cracker crumbs, optional
*Substitute an 8-ounce container if that's what's in your fridge!
 Instructions:
  1. Place pumpkin, cream cheese and yogurt in a blender.
  2. Add the low-fat milk, brown sugar, vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg.
  3. Cover and blend until smooth.
  4. Pour into glasses and top each serving with a teaspoon of graham cracker crumbs if desired.
  5. Tell your parents that you made a new, nutrition-packed snack that has plenty of vitamin A, calcium and fiber!

Teller Families Invited
On Wednesday, November 18, our students will enjoy a fabulous Thanksgiving meal with all the fixings.

Upon our return from Fall Break, we will send out a reservation form so we know how many guests we can expect to join us.
thanksgiving menu:
Adult meals costs $3 (add milk for 40¢)
Kid meals are $2 (includes milk).

Help!
Our wonderful Cafeteria Manager, Ms. Melanie, is looking for 2 parent volunteers to help serve food on this day.  Also, we need some parent volunteers to help us decorate the tables prior to the meal.  Please let Denise or Misty know if you are willing to volunteer.

Learning Landscape

Stop by and Look at the Plans

Our new playground will not just be a place to play, but a well-planned, rich learning environment! Hence the name Learning Landscape.

Our Learning Landscape Architect, Rebecca Silva, will drop off the Learning Landscape plans this Friday.  We will have them on display outside of the Library.

Interested parents and staff will have the opportunity to meet Rebecca and the DPS team on Thursday, Nov. 5 at 1:30pm in the Library.  Please join us if you are interested.

Movement Dance

movement1: movement2:
With winter-like weather, we’ve already had a few “inside days.” But Teller students can keep themselves moving with options like Dance with Ms. Barton.

Jump Rope For Heart

Jump Rope for Heart, a fund raiser for the American Heart Association, will start in all Physical Education classes November 1.

All students will be participating in the jumping portion of the event through the month of November. The students that choose to raise money for the American Heart Association will earn prizes for their efforts from the Association.

If Teller reaches its goal of $2000, we will get one hundred dollars of physical education equipment from U.S. Games. AND, the top ten fundraising students will get to turn Ms. Chris into an ice cream sundae!!

Donation envelopes are due to Ms. Chris Monday, November 16.
