May 2008 Tellergram![]() We’ve had an eventful year at Teller this year! Hopefully you and your families have acquired some fond memories of the 2007-2008 school year. Perhaps at one of our Community Events, the Wine Tasting, Tellerpalooza, Electives classes, Disco Night, class performances, Lights on After School programs, in the classroom or one of many other activities here at Teller . There is much to look forward to for the 2008-2009 school year, too. With the implementation of our HGT program, a new principal starting in December and a new PTA board with exciting new visions, it is sure to be a year to remember! At the beginning of next year, you will notice our new coat hooks in the hallway. These HangSafe hooks are of the highest safety standards and will help keep our classrooms and hallways neat and tidy. I would like to extend a big thank you to all those who have helped make this school year an enjoyable success. They are from this year’s Shakespeare play…the Tempest. Come to dinner and a play! May 6, 2007. The play starts at 7:00 pm, a spaghetti dinner will be served 5:30-6:30. See 2008 Shakespeare Play : The Tempest for more details. Watch for information coming home with more details. For many years now, students have performed an abridged (shortened) but authentic (no words added or changed) version of a Shakespeare play for students, parents and friends. Please come and plan to enjoy our talented thespians. They work very hard and do an incredible job! On Friday, May 9th, the cast and crew will head downtown to perform 5 scenes from “The Tempest” at the Denver Public Schools 24th annual Shakespeare Festival at the Denver Center for the Performing Arts (DCPA). There, 12 stages, all going at once, perform scenes from Shakespeare’s plays, dance as was the custom in Shakespeare’s time, and sing and play music to which William Shakespeare might have listened. There are thousands of students from elementary, middle and high schools who come together to perform and enjoy Shakespeare. Come, enjoy the day! Book FairSee 2008 Spring Book Fair for more details.A reminder to Parents:We need your help in making sure your child has appropriate behaviors when you bring them to after-school events or activities. Children should follow the day time school safety rules for evening activities. For your child’s safety, here are a few behaviors to keep an eye on:• Walk in the school lunchroom and halls. (Please take them outside if they need to let off energy) • Watch that they don’t climb or walk on the half wall in the ramp area outside the auditorium. • Swinging upside down on banisters or railings can result in serious accidents. • Roller blade shoes scuff and mark the floors. In addition, they are a safety hazard. Thank you for enforcing good manners with your child to keep them safe at evening events Student Council Works to End World HungerGive a man a fish and you feed him for a day.Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime. -Chinese Proverb Teller Student Council has made a generous donation to Heifer International—a “long-term development” assistance organization—working toward ending world hunger. The students voted to give $100 to purchase a flock of ducks, a chick, and a tree, which will be given to different families in need. Heifer Intl. has been in existence for over 60 years and works to provide global assistance in a model of self-reliance which is a permanent answer for communities in poverty. A typical Heifer Intl. project consists of three essential components: • The gift of livestock and other material goods • Training to use and sustain the gift • “passing on the gift” to another family in need in their community Teller proudly gave material goods. Heifer Intl. will provide families with the training they need to use these renewable gifts. For more information on Heifer International visit their website at www.heifer.org BROWSE THE INTERNET LIKE THEY DO IN SCHOOLDoes your child want to show you a cool web page they learned about at school? The deadline to have all charges paid is Monday, May 5th. After May 5th charging will no longer be allowed, so be sure to send money with your child. We need to have payment in full by the 30th of April so we can settle our books and compile our financial reports. No Exceptions!! If your child receives free lunch, the charges were probably incurred before your child was approved for free lunch and they still must be paid.Thank you, Lunchroom Manager, Melanie Hinkson Dear Parents and Guardians As many of you may know, your children (along with all other DPS students) study Everyday Math in their classrooms. This math program may be a little different than the way many of us were taught in the past; however, this does not mean Everyday Math is too hard for anyone to comprehend. EM is a spiral math program that introduces students to each math concept several times over their school careers. Through this approach, EM hopes to build a better understanding of concepts, rather than just rote memorization of facts and procedures. Although some of you may be unfamiliar with the techniques used in Everyday Math, there are many helpful resources available to you and your children right at home! • One of the greatest resources offered is the “Family Letter” that begins each unit. These letters are distributed by your child’s teacher at the beginning of each unit to help you better understand what your child is learning. If you have never taken a glance at these letters before, I strongly suggest you do so in the future. • Another great tool available to you and your child is the Everyday Math Games website. This site offers a plethora of grade-appropriate games that support your child’s learning. Most of our students at Teller have been exposed to EM Games, and know how to use the site. To access the site, your child has a small card with both his/her login and password printed on it. • Also, on the EM Games site you and your child have access to the SRB (Student Reference Book) that you students use in class. This is a fantastic way to help your child at home if he/she has any questions you do not know how to answer. At school, your child accesses EM Games through an icon on the computer desktops, or through the bookmarks page, ikeepbookmarks. Also, at home you can access the site through the DPS website at www.dpsk12.org, and click on the “Parents and Students” button on the left-hand side. Within the next page there is an icon that says “EMGames Home access for all DPS elementary students,” click on this button and it will take you to the EMGames site. If you do not have a computer at home, have no fear, the EMGames website can be accessed at any library with internet access. Have your child join the summer reading program through DPL, and play EMGames, and his or her summer will be educational and fun!
